Welcome to Kindergarten

Hello,  This year in Kindergarten we will be learning so much! Below is a basic syllabus of what we will cover this year.

Morning Meeting Binder

Every morning Students will complete morning binder which will work on Number Sense, Routines, Geometry and Repeating Patterns.

Shared Reading

Students will read along with teacher modelling  print awareness with a favorite song or poem on a chart, a big book, a printed article or the morning message.  All shared reading will be based around weekly and monthly themes.  For poems students will be required to recite poem back to teacher after 5 days of learning and practicing poem.

Word Wall Words

Each day students will have word work.  In the beginning of the year it will start with letters and  sounds, then will quickly progress to sight words and learning how to phonetically remember them through stories, rhyming, word families, etc.  Each week students will be given 5-6 words that they will be expected to read, spell and write independently in a dictated sentence by the end of the week.  All lessons are cumulative so that students continue to  expand their vocabulary throughout the year.

Grading Policy

 

All work students complete will be given a numeric grade on a scale of:

-0 to 100%

 

--Students will be graded on all assessments using this scale

-Student homework will be counted if completed not if correct

 -classwork will be graded as a

   -WOW! -Work that exceeds expectations

   - Star- Work that meets expectation

  - Smile- Work that is partially proficient

  - Check mark- Work that needs to be fixed,       

     shows lacking grasp of concept 

  - "I"- incomplete work

Read Aloud

Students will participate in an Author Study each week.  Students will hear stories read aloud to them by a specific author throughout the week and or month.  Students will be asked questions prior to story or after the story.

Story Follow Up/ Reading Group

After hearing the story students will be given an activity to complete that deals with the story and touches upon having them show their understanding of different story elements.  This activity will allow students to write and draw pictures to show their understanding.  Students may also be given a writing prompt and be asked to write about a particular topic, compare and/or contrast stories, or create independent writing pieces.  During the time students are actively engaged in this activity, they will be scheduled to have an online reading lesson three times a week so as to get guided instruction on how to use reading strategies to become proficient readers.

Hello,  This year in Kindergarten we will be learning so much! Below is a basic syllabus of what we will cover this year.

MATH

Morning Meeting Binder

In math students will be taught at the level they are on to assure mastery of all concepts.  Each morning students will participate in Individualized Morning Meeting.  This incorporates everything you would find in a normal morning meeting but focuses on students grasping concepts so they will be extended throughout the year:  Daily Data Collection - Graphs, weather, Calendar

Math Lessons

All math lessons will be introduced via, live teacher, video or online program, based on choice of parent/ school district.  Lessons will cover content through hands on activities, songs, and other interactive ways to help students to remember concepts.

Math Lessons Follow Up

After math lesson, students will be given items on their task list that through completion teacher will be able to see the student's overall understanding of the concept.  This is done via paper pencil tasks and online tasks, that track student progress and adapt to student answers.

Assessments

After follow up activity teacher will use a variety of ways to assess students including but not limited to paper pencil tests at the end of each unit.
